Just like any other home appliance, your air conditioner experiences wear and tear from prolonged and regular use, and develops mechanical issues at some point during its lifetime. Getting your air conditioning regularly maintained is your best course of action to make sure your unit will function efficiently throughout its life cycle.

But there are also a few simple home air conditioning maintenance chores that you can do at home to make sure your system runs smoothly and optimally. Doing so will help you minimise breakdowns and address minor issues before a qualified professional comes in to service your unit.

1. Clean / replace filters

This is one of the most important home maintenance chores you need to do. It is essential to replace air conditioning filters (or clean them if you own a reusable filter) at least once a month during peak seasons, such as summer or winter.

Air conditioning filters tend to get clogged by dirt and dust. When filters are grimy, airflow decreases and your system will need to work harder to reach your desired temperature. The air coming out of your air conditioner is also affected and may trigger allergic reactions and asthma.

2. Check wiring and components

Before doing any kind of work on your air conditioner, make sure your unit is turned off. You can do so through the service disconnect on your outdoor unit or at the main breaker panel of your home. Once done, you can proceed with checking for any signs of overheating, such as burnt wires or melted insulation. You can also check all electrical connections and make sure they are tight and secured.

If you notice problems, we recommend contacting an air conditioning contractor and have the issues fixed.

3. Check for leaks

Check your air conditioner components for any leaks and oil buildup. If you encounter this type of problem, call a qualified technician immediately.

Remember, when doing routine checkups, be cautious and don’t open the unit as this may void any warranty that your system carries. Call a qualified technician and let them handle the job for you.

If you’re uncomfortable with performing any of the maintenance tasks mentioned above, don’t hesitate to call for a professional air conditioning technician to do it for you.
